We took a gander around the town to see if Ennis is truly a grand spot for life with a canine companion, or if it leaves dog owners feeling like they’ve been sent on a wild goose chase.
Infrastructures
Ennis, the charming medieval market town in the heart of County Clare, is a compact and walkable spot, which is brilliant news if you’re out and about with your four-legged pal. The pedestrianised streets in the town centre are a huge plus, allowing for a relaxed stroll without the hassle of heavy traffic. You’ll often see plenty of dogs out with their owners, particularly around the shops and along the River Fergus, suggesting a vibrant local dog community.
However, when it comes to dedicated off-leash areas, the town is currently lacking the proper infrastructure. While you’ll find plenty of green spaces just on the outskirts, such as Lees Road, Ballyalla Lake, and Tim Smythe Park, where dogs can stretch their legs, a purpose-built, secure dog park has yet to materialise, though plans have been lodged. This means dog owners have to be a bit more creative when looking for a secure spot to let their dogs off the lead. For those without a decent garden, it’s a bit of a nuisance.

When it comes to essential services, Ennis is doing a roaring trade. The town and its immediate surrounds are well-served with a good selection of quality veterinary clinics, ensuring your dog is looked after if they’re feeling a bit under the weather. Pet owners will also be happy to find multiple pet supply stores and at least one dedicated pet centre, meaning you’re never stuck for kibble or a new toy.
Grooming and training are also well catered for, with several dog groomers and professional dog trainers operating in the area, including options for behaviourist consultation and at-home training. Furthermore, the selection of dog-sitting, walking, and day-care services is top-notch, giving owners a wealth of choices when they need someone trustworthy to mind the dog. This network of services means that, for practical care, Ennis has the whole shebang sorted.

Ennis is a real gem for the dog owner who loves a good pól ar an mbóthar (a walk on the road) through history. Its walkable, medieval centre and proximity to excellent natural spots like Ballyalla Lake and the River Fergus trails are definite high points. The local community also appears welcoming to dogs, with a few cafes offering outdoor seating and water bowls—you might even get a friendly hello for your dog from a local.
The biggest drawback is undoubtedly the absence of a secure, dedicated dog park within the town proper. While the variety and quality of professional services are excellent, the town’s own facilities for off-leash fun could be improved. Once those park plans come to fruition, Ennis will truly be the bee’s knees. For now, it’s a brilliant town for dogs, but not quite perfect.
